Revolutionizing Telecommunications Networks

Revolutionizing Telecommunications Networks
December 10, 2022

Open RAN (ORAN) signifies a novel concept within the telecommunications industry, presenting enhanced flexibility and standardization in Radio Access Networks (RAN). In this model, various elements of the mobile network, such as antennas, radio equipment, and software, possess the capability to be interchanged with equipment from different suppliers.
This model offers more flexibility in equipment selection and uses common standards from diverse suppliers. Open RAN enables the choice of equipment from different vendors, fostering market diversity and competition. ORAN Increased competition and standardization through Open RAN can lead to reduced capital and operational expenses. One of the challenges of Open RAN is coordinating standards and interaction among diverse components from various suppliers, which may pose challenges, and implementing and installing various components from different suppliers might introduce complexities.

The primary objective of Open RAN is to create an open and standardized infrastructure for telecommunications networks, enhancing flexibility and cost-efficiency. The Open RAN architecture consists of three primary layers, including “Radio Access,” “Central Solutions,” and “Artificial Intelligence & Network Management.” These layers allow the utilization of various equipment and software from different suppliers to create a diverse and flexible network.
Open RAN aims to establish a more competitive market and reduce dependence on limited suppliers, potentially resulting in cost reductions and improved quality of telecommunication services. With continued development and adoption, the future of this technology is likely to witness continuous improvement and further expansion.

Teleformation’s ORAN Endeavors: Pioneering Future-Ready Networks

Since the inception of the Open RAN concept, Teleformation has been at the forefront of research and development in this domain. Our dedicated team has explored various aspects of ORAN technology, encompassing economic, business, technical, coordination, and operational facets.
We’ve delved into extensive studies, evaluating its technical performance, while diligently monitoring various vendors and trends to ensure our position at the cutting edge of technology. Our commitment extends beyond theoretical knowledge, focusing on practical insights and strategic partnerships.

Seeking Collaborative Ventures

Teleformation is actively seeking product and service information, including cost estimations, from proficient vendors to pioneer OPEN RAN pilot solutions, infrastructure, and services. This initiative is designed to support Operators in manifesting their vision of establishing a resilient 5G network for the future.

The Pilot Implementation Initiative

Aligned with our vision, our goal is to execute a pilot scenario in tandem with the desired ORAN technology, collaborating closely with operators. This pilot project aims to identify adept entities within this sector while providing Operators with essential knowledge on core competencies, the latest technologies, and relevant technical details crucial for a successful OPEN RAN implementation.
Our chosen ORAN technology strictly adheres to protocols stipulated by the ORAN Alliance, encompassing essential components such as O-RU, O-DU, O-CU, and RIC.

Chronicles of Endeavors Until Present Day…

Our operational experience in ORAN began by initiating our technical studies to acquaint ourselves not only with its technical aspects but also with its advantages and challenges. Subsequently, while examining various vendors, we commenced negotiations with operators. This action aimed to enhance coordination between our company and operators, enlightening us about the requirements of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).

Ultimately, an RFI (Request for Information) was prepared by the operator in this domain and shortly transformed into an RFP (Request for Proposal) to implement a pilot project from the operator’s side. Concurrently, based on our market investigations, our company proposed various options to the operator, aiming to implement this pilot in different scenarios and dedicating our utmost efforts in this regard.

We are hopeful that in the coming year, we will engage in a collaborative effort with the operator to deploy their pilot project. Consequently, through discussions with different operational sectors, including the R&D department of the operator, we initiated substantive negotiations, fostering a positive and productive interaction. The successful experience the operator has had with our company strengthens our optimism for the successful completion of this project.
